The TWA Hotel
Our last night in New York we decided to stay at the TWA Hotel which is located in JFK Airport. TWA is an old terminal from the 1960’s that was renovated into a hotel. The minute you step inside you are transported to the 1960’s glamour era of travel. I love the 60’s so I am just a bit obsessed with this hotel as you can see by my retro outfits. The hotel is huge with over 500 rooms. We stayed in the Hughes wing, and our room was great. It was filled with Mid Century Modern decor, and I just loved the attention to detail. There was even an old rotary phone in the room.
After we got to our room we dressed up and checked out the hotel. Walking around the hotel felt like I was in Mad Men or Catch Me If You Can. Make sure you check out the whole property because there are many spots that are hidden. After our walk we got a drink at the bar downstairs and enjoyed listening to the wonderful retro music playlist that they play 24/7. Later we got dinner at the restaurant Paris Cafe by Jean Georges. The food was a little basic but really tasty nonetheless. I think that because so many people come and go from this hotel they need to make sure they cater to everyone. It is a beautiful restaurant, but is what I would call fancy/casual.
The next day we woke up and grabbed a bite to eat at the food hall downstairs. Then we put on our bathing suits and went to their epic rooftop pool which overlooks the tarmac. The pool is heated so no worries if it is cold outside. It is truly one of the coolest hotel pool experiences I have had. After that we explored some more and took pictures by Connie the Airplane. Our flight was not until 4:30 so we extended our stay that day. It was so easy to get to our terminal. It was only 1 stop on the air train and probably took us less than 10 minutes. I would definitely recommend coming to stay here especially since you do not need to rush from the city to JFK in traffic and risk being late for your flight. One night or even a day stay is enough staying here to do everything you want to do, because there is really nothing else around the hotel.
There were just a few of downsides to our stay. One, is that the room was a bit stuffy. It was very hot that day and there are no windows to open either. Two is that not everything was open due to the pandemic restrictions. We were really looking forward to the cocktail bar inside of Connie the airplane but it was closed (only to open a few days after we left). Regardless we had an incredible time and I cannot wait to come back and stay here again.
